At PROJECT ROCKIT, we’ve spent nearly two decades working alongside young people to build a safer, more inclusive digital world. As a trusted voice in online safety, we’ve worked closely with major tech platforms to champion policies that protect those most at risk of harm. That’s why, as part of the Meta Safety Advisory Council (SAC) , we’ve signed onto a joint letter raising urgent concerns about Meta’s recent policy changes.

Why We’re Speaking Up

In January 2025,  Meta announced significant changes to its content moderation, hateful conduct policies, and fact-checking programs– decisions that will have far-reaching consequences for online safety. While we acknowledge the evolving nature of digital policy, we’re deeply concerned that these shifts will weaken protections for young people and marginalised communities, creating more opportunities for harm to thrive online.

As a member of Meta’s Safety Advisory Council, PROJECT ROCKIT has historically played a key role in advising on major safety matters – particularly those impacting young people, and marginalised communities who are disproportionately affected by online hate, harassment, and misinformation. While Meta has more recently built out external advisories covering areas such as AI, VR, youth, and women’s safety, the Safety Advisory Council is the original, global advisory group spanning the full safety remit. However, in this instance, we were not consulted before these sweeping changes were made. This lack of input from safety experts is concerning, and we believe it sets a troubling precedent for how safety considerations are weighed in major policy decisions.

What We’re Calling For

The letter, addressed to Meta’s executive leadership, urges the company to:

Prioritise mental health and wellbeing support for young people and marginalised communities by strengthening partnerships with helplines, trusted flaggers, and organisations serving young people.

Commit to a ‘Safety by Design’ approach that embeds safety into all future policy and product decisions, ensuring the wellbeing of all users is a priority.

Champion media literacy education to equip users—especially young people—with the skills to navigate misinformation and online risks.

Consider the global impact of policy decisions by increasing transparency around content moderation practices across different regions and languages.

What next?

This letter has been shared directly with Meta’s Heads of Global Policy Management and Global Public Policy, and we’re awaiting their response. While we continue to engage with Meta and push for stronger safety measures, we also see this as an important moment for accountability. That’s why we are sharing this letter here – so that young people, educators, parents, and communities can see exactly where we stand.

At PROJECT ROCKIT, we believe that real accountability requires both open dialogue and constructive scrutiny. Meaningful change happens when we engage directly with decision-makers while also holding space for critical conversations about the impact of their policies. We remain committed to working with policy makers across Government and industry to build safer digital spaces – ensuring young people’s voices are not only heard but actively shape the online world they navigate every day.
